Celebrating New China's 60th Birthday and Moon Festival Manhattan Cruise held Successfully
Peking University Alumni Association of Greater New York (PKUAAGNY) co-hosted the Manhattan Cruise with brother and sister university alumni associations and professional organizations, to celebrate New China’s 60th anniversary and the traditional Moon Festival on October 3, 2009.
More than 520 Students, scholars, and overseas Chinese gathered together to warmly celebrate the Chinese traditional festival. Their enthusiasm was not affected at all by the weather forecast of thunderstorms, and the registered participants already exceeded 400 by October 2.
Although it was cloudy and modestly cold in the autumn Manhattan at first, the clouds faded after 4pm and gave way to the sunset with sunshine shed on Manhattan from the west of Hudson River. Before the scheduled boarding time of 6:15pm, many participants were already in the queue waiting for boarding on the pier. They were from alumni associations in Greater New York region and professional organizations, within which were 50-60 years old seniors, kids and foreigners. More than 500 people sat together and chatted with each other, making the boat a joyful place.
As the boat departed from the port, the president of Tianjin University Alumni Association Dr. Yisong Chen, who initiated and organized this event, as well as Bing Xu, Economic and Commercial Counselor of the Consulate General of PRC in New York delivered short speeches. Participants stood up singing China’s National Anthem and then enjoyed the moon cakes and the bright moon above Manhattan, to express their love to the motherland. Ming Chen, Counselor of Science & Technology of the Permanent Mission of PRC to the United Nations, was present at the event.
